On Patience at the Pacific Edge

The shoreline never holds still. Even from the same overlook, tide, wind, and low cloud can redraw the scene in minutes. A familiar headland might disappear into mist and return with a strip of sunlight across its edge.

Coastal photography is an exercise in choosing what to leave out. A wide view tells the story of scale; a closer frame can make a single meeting of water and rock feel intimate. Neither is more truthful. They simply ask us to notice different things.

When the weather is unsettled, there is a temptation to wait for a perfectly clear sky. But the in-between hours often give the coast its character: softened horizons, muted color, and a sense of distance that sharp sunshine cannot reproduce.

Patience does not guarantee a particular photograph. It creates room to see the place as it is. That openness is often the difference between a picture of the coast and a picture that feels like being there.
